Today and tomorrow.
Last year a young couple moved in across the street
from us. They have a beautiful daughter who waves at me
whenever I am working in the yard.
Every time I walk across the street to see her, she picks
a flower for me. A dandelion. Most of us see them as weeds.
When she hands one to me I see a rare, beautiful flower.
Her mom is expecting a second child soon. It was during
a recent conversation I discovered the secret.
"How is your daughter handling the news of being a big sister?"
I asked.
"She's so very excited about it," her mom replied.
"Does she really understand?"
"Well, I talk to her about it. I told her that when it's time
she will go to a friend's house to stay and she won't see
me for a few days."
That's where she has trouble.
"When we talk about the baby coming, she will ask,
"Today?" No, not today."
Then she revealed the secret to me.
"All she knows is today and tomorrow. She completely
lives in today and tomorrow and then today and tomorrow."
That's it! That's the secret.
When we grow older we change. A child lives for
today and hopes for tomorrow. Until a certain age they
don't think about yesterday.
As adults we often spend too much time dwelling on what
happened in the past. That's how we lose part of our today
and in some cases really screw up our tomorrow.
We can't change yesterday. It's over. It's gone. We can
only make changes today and make plans for tomorrow.
Of course, some of us also spend too much time worrying
beyond tomorrow. Such worry about what happened
yesterday and what might happen beyond tomorrow
steals away from the reality that all we really have is this
very moment. Then the next.
Live today, not like it's your last, but like it's your first day
ever! When you open your eyes it's all new. The only
thing that is the same is you and all that you carried
with you into this brand new day. Learn to leave behind
the baggage of yesterday. Travel lightly. All that
you really need will be provided.
We can learn to live more freely, love more intensely and
be happier than ever before simply by applying the secret
of youth...live today and hope for tomorrow.
"I wish you enough!"
